40 Days of CALM THROUGH THE CHAOS
“Today I choose:
calm over chaos
serenity over stress
peace over perfection
grace over grit
faith over fear”
~Mary Davis
As we completed our last 40 -Day Meditation focusing UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, there was a shift emerging in the world as a result of decisions and orders that impacts many people and countries around the world. I believe there are other ways to negotiate with trading partners and respectfully communicate with leaders of other countries other than what we have seen. It is difficult to stay focused, calm, and purposeful. There is a feeling of fear, loss of hope, uncertainty, While we can’t control the actions of others, we can make a difference in our own being, our families, our lives and communities.
Many of you have reached out to me and to others in our hopeful community to try to make sense of it all. As a result, we are going to focus the 40-Day practice to finding ways to stay calm and peaceful despite the chaos around us.
How do we navigate the overall unruliness of life, so filled as it is with urgencies—tasks left undone, friends who need help, health problems, financial pressures, family crises, community crises, world crises? How do we sustain ourselves, our sanity, our open hearts and clear vision in the face of these ongoing challenges?
This past week, I had the privilege and honour in participating in a ceremonial drum making workshop. I was the only person in the workshop and appreciated the one on one time with the teacher, an indigenous Mexican Lakota man who has learned the ways of the people. He spoke of purity of intentions, connection with Mother Earth, honouring the ancestors, all our relations with the plants, animals and each other. I was then invited to the sweat lodge ceremony two days later. I was embraced into the community and experienced an overwhelming sense of connection, unconditional love and the way through the chaos. This planet and humanity does not need more visions of desperation, separation, fear, doubt, greed and hate - it requires an abundance in love, relationships, and gratitude being grounded, staying connected and living with decency and respect. This is how we restore wholeness and happiness to our planetary adventure. We must listen, respond with curiosity rather than react. We also need to stand tall, with Elbows UP! and do what we can for democracy, human rights and sovereignty. We need to be calm through the chaos.
The past few years have focused on gratitude, hope, grace, flourishing, joy and unconditional love. This practice will focus on calm through the chaos throughout the 40 days, as we gather together in our hopeful community and practice each day with intention, and learn, support and share with and for each other.
A meditation practice one of the best prescriptions for human flourishing, health, unconditional love and equanimity.
We have a beautifully designed system in our bodies called the Renewal Response. This is our antidote to the Stress Response. The renewal response is both activated by love and activates love. AND it takes intention and attention. A calm presence begins with awareness, being with, and noticing your internal experience so that you can mount a healthy response to conflict or angst, and lead with acts of love and compassion. The ripple effect from your own response has significant impact on those around you, and who knows how much farther.
