30 Day Messy Draft

From Messy to Magic  -  NaNoWriMo 2024

With The Writer’s Adventure

Dear Writer!

You’re in the right place.

Dear person unsure if you can call yourself a writer!

You are still in the right place.

Dear journaler, poet, doodler, word nerd, academic writer, business writer, blogger and any other self-identifying word person…

You are definitely in the right place.

Starting now, you are a Writing Adventurer,

For 30 days in November you are invited to get messy with us!

It’s time for you to write your 50,000 draft, Adventure Style… as part of NaNoWriMo 2024.

Clutter and mess show us that life is being lived...Tidiness makes me think of held breath, of suspended animation... Perfectionism is a mean, frozen form of idealism, while messes are the artist’s true friend. What people somehow forgot to mention when we were children was that we need to make messes in order to find out who we are and why we are here.
— ~Anne Lamott

What is NaNoWriMo?

NaNoWriMo is short form for: National Novel Writing Month which began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel in 30 days. Each year, beginning November 1st, hundreds of thousands of people around the world began to write with the goal of completing a first draft by November 30th.

Why do we call it a Messy Draft?

We’ve been working with writers for over a decade. We’ve walked beside dozens of writers, writers who have brought their ideas to the page and their pages into complete manuscripts. Over the last four years, we’ve helped numerous authors publish their books, and we’ve learned a few things…

  1. Writers need a container (like NaNoWriMo, or a Cohort experience) to get it done.

  2. What people think a first draft is, ain’t a first draft, it’s a messy draft (and it should be).

  3. A messy draft is joyful to write.

  4. A messy draft is a collection of everything that lights you up about the story and everything that freaks you out at the same time.

  5. You need a messy draft before an outline or a first draft can actually happen (truth).

  6. A messy draft makes all of the other drafts to come, possible (and do-able)

  7. Creativity + Inspiration + Time in your seat writing = A Messy Draft.

  8. Anyone can do a messy draft…because anyone can go on an adventure.

If you always wanted to write, and now you are “A Certain Age”, and you never got around to it, and you think it’s too late…do please think again. I watched Julia Glass win the National Book Award for her first novel, “The Three Junes”, which she began writing in her late 30’s. As she held up her National Book Award (13 years later), she said, “This is for all the late-bloomers in the world.

What is the 30 Day Messy Draft Challenge?

30-50,000 words by November 30th

We say 30k because maybe your manuscript is written in poetry, or is a series of letters, or something else entirely.

30 days of story-oriented decisions

Words on a page don’t happen in your head. Plot points can change later, but nothing happens on the page unless you’re willing to start somewhere.

Write 12,500 words (or ¼ of your book) each week.

Using our Messy Draft Map and our Writer’s Go Bag of tools, you will chase inspiration one 500 word chunk of writing at a time.

  • Big Ideas and the 3 Act Structure

  • Actionable Plot

Tina Overbury

story coach, author, writer, performer and storyteller

Tina Overbury is a multi-disciplinary artist. She’s a story coach, author, writer, performer and storyteller who works with narrative and story structure as a vehicle for human connection. She’s been a professional story coach for individuals and social impact organizations for the last ten years. On The Writer’s Adventure team, Tina’s experience as a performer and passion for the rehearsal process often sees her as the story and writing coach for authors in the initial stages of their writing process: concept development, collecting stage, draft one (for the writer) and draft four (voice & impact). Tina can also usually be found at the front of the room leading the workshop sessions during the The Writer’s Adventure Weekend Getaway Retreats.

Tina has created pieces for film, the stage, and in her writing. She is currently working on three books: Don’t Move the Body – a collection of personal essays and poetry about the impact of silent violence against women. OMYGOD – a storytelling for reconciliation piece inspired from her one-person show about the women we burned, the babies we buried and the Gods we have worshipped, and Story From the Core – twelve core stories in relationship to origin stories from around the world. Tina’s work is rooted in myth, mysticism, and always with a spirit of PLAY.

Meribeth Deen

journalist, writer, producer, editor, researcher and writing coach

Meribeth is a journalist, writer, producer, editor, researcher and writing coach. A sense of everyday complexity drew her to writing and led her into newsrooms and other strange locales. Meribeth’s entire career so far has been as a writer/editor/researcher working for the CBC (journalist), UBC (communications), the Bowen Island Undercurrent (editor), James Hoggan & Associates (writer/researcher), Xenophile Media (researcher/story producer) and more.

As part of The Writer’s Adventure team, Meribeth’s experience as a journalist and researcher often sees her work extensively with authors as they transition from a first draft to a their story-draft (2nd draft), and as they’re doing the challenging work of asking all of the hard questions and leaving no stone unturned in their research (3rd draft). Her strength as an editor also sees her at the table with authors as they bring their fifth (polish) draft across the finish line to becoming ‘publish-ready’.

Meribeth can also be found working one on one with writers attending our 3x/year writer’s retreats. Meribeth is currently working on multiple freelance writing projects and building a new life in Whitehorse, Yukon Canada.

Dori Howard

Trauma-Informed Executive Coach, Retreat Specialist, Retired Nurse, Spaceholder and Kundalini Yoga Instructor.

Dori is an Executive Coach, Retreat Specialist, Facilitator, Retired Nurse, and Kundalini Yoga Instructor. She is also the owner of Enso Learning.

Dori has a BScN from U of Alberta, an MA in Leadership and a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University. She is a licensed facilitator for Coaching Out of the Box and a member of the International Coach Federation, Institute of Coaching (Harvard Medical School) and the Neuro-Leadership Institute.  She is a certified practitioner for EQ in Action Profile and The LeadershipCircle 360 Assessment tool and is certified as a Trauma Informed Coach working with first responders and couples to overcome the impact of PTSD.

As part of the Writer’s Adventure team, Dori is there to support the internal ‘marathon’ happening within a writer on their transformative journey of authoring a book. You will find Dori in one on one sessions with writers as they establish their goals and rhythms and as they navigate feelings of stuckness and/or overwhelm, and at the front of the room leading Yoga classes for The Writer’s Adventure community.

Dori views learning not just in the definitive sense of a formal education, but also in the deeper, broader understanding of human relationships that shape all aspects of our lives – our work, our families, our communities.  She describes this as her “conscious curiosity.” Dori believes that to imagine, define, manifest, and sustain “success” in our professional and personal lives, we must be willing to examine ourselves with honesty, curiosity, and compassion. We must also be willing to embrace the “sometimes-unsettling-but-ultimately-rewarding” journey towards transformation.

What other Writers  are saying

Meribeth Deen and Tina Overbury helped me write my first book, a book that has been inside of me for a number of years but which I struggled getting onto the written page. They helped me transform the words and content into something amazing, that is me, but I could not do it on my own. They guide. They coach. They ask. They listen. They challenge. They understand. As a team, there is this intersection of gifts, talents, experience and personality that dovetail beautifully. I am a more confident writer because of these two. They are loyal and supportive. They are with you every step of the way. Without them, I would have had a book. That’s it. With them, I have my life work, my words, my creation in a beautiful format that is now ready for the world to see. Know this! This is the team you want to have walk beside you through the process of writing and completing a book because they honor ‘you’ and your work. I highly recommend Meribeth and Tina. I will hire them again for Book Two.
— Wendy Turner Larsen - Becoming You
One of the greatest human needs is the need to be witnessed. Tina creates and holds sacred safe space for me to share my story. She asks thoughtful clarifying questions, so she deeply understands my share and then she offers observations that help me to get clear and challenges me to go deeper and expand my perspective.
