How Is Kundalini Yoga Different From Other Types of Yoga?

Kundalini yoga is unique. It’s not like other forms of yoga. We wear white. We chant. We do the “breath of fire.” While many other types of yoga focus exclusively on physical postures, Kundalini goes deeper than that.

Here’s how this ancient yoga practice is different from other types like Hatha, Yin, or Vinyasa.

Kundalini Focuses on Spirituality

If you’re looking for yoga that helps you connect with your spiritual side, Kundalini is the yoga for you. While other styles like Hatha or Vinyasa prioritize the physical benefits and proper alignment, Kundalini is centred around Kundalini energy, a powerful force believed to reside at the base of the spine. This spiritual aspect is central to the practice, with the goal of achieving self-realization and a heightened sense of consciousness.

you chant

Chanting might feel weird at first, but it’s a wonderful way to release any pent-up anxiety. According to ABC, scientific studies show that chanting has many positive mental health effects, such as the ability to “decrease stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as increase positive mood, feelings of relaxation and focused attention.” It’s a powerful practice that’s been done for thousands of years, but its benefits are only recently being understood and accepted in Western cultures.

you “breathe fire”

Not literally. But the “Breath of Fire” is a core focus of Kundalini. It involves a rapid pumping of the breath through the nostrils. This powerful breathing technique is believed to stoke the internal fire (agni) and energize the body and mind. While other styles utilize breathwork like pranayama, they may not emphasize breathing quite like we do in Kundalini.

you really can be a beginner

Because other styles of yoga focus on physical poses, it can feel intimidating to show up to a yoga class when you’re new. You might feel uncomfortable if you’re not at a certain physical level. But with Kundalini, you really can be a beginner. Many of our clients here at Enso even practice in a chair. The purpose is to move your spine, tap into your consciousness, and reconnect with yourself.

Kundalini is a sacred yoga practice that has been used for centuries. Here at Enso, we feel honoured that we can share an ancient spiritual practice with our communities on Salt Spring Island, BC and Baja, Mexico. If you’re interested in joining our yoga community, learn more or get in touch.
