Physics of Meditation

“Wherever you have friends that’s your country, and wherever you receive love, that’s your home.”

― Dalai Lama XIV

When I was in high school, I registered for physics as one of my essential courses.  I needed it to become a physiotherapist (which I didn’t become).  I was fascinated by the science of physics but wasn’t very adept at it.  Thankfully, my two lab partners were the smartest and most diligent students in the class, so I managed to squeak by with a decent grade.

Without getting into the specifics of all the physics equations I don’t remember, I am fascinated with the movement of energy and light.  As a kundalini yoga teacher and practitioner, I am constantly asking students to move in certain ways to move the energy.  Or I choose meditations that send healing energy and light to someone who is in need of it.  While it seems intuitive to me, there is actually a science behind all this.

It has to do with photons.

A photon is a fundamental particle of light that is both ordinary and full of surprises. What physicists refer to as photons, other people might just call light.  As quanta of light, photons are the smallest possible packets of electromagnetic energy.

A scientifically controlled study conducted by German researchers at the University of Kassel has shown that while the chest area of an average person emits only 20 photons of light per second, someone who meditates on their heart centre and sends love and light to others emits an amazing 100,000 photons per second.

That is 5000 times more than the average human being. Numerous studies have also shown that when these photons are infused with loving and healing intent, their frequency and vibration increases to the point where they can literally change matter, heal disease, and transform negative events.

"After ten minutes of meditating on compassion, on kindness for others, and you will see its effects all day. That’s the way to maintain a calm and joyous mind.”

~From The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World" by the Dalai Lama

My most favourite meditations are those that focus on the heart centre, healing and have melodic or reverent chanting.  And they are backed by science! Join me to move energy in a kundalini yoga class or meditation evening.
